About Illustrated Penny Tales From The ''Strand'' Library: Illustrated Penny Tales From The ''Strand'' Library
was a short-lived attempt in 1894 by British publisher George Newnes to
derive additional revenue from the phenomenal success of The Strand Magazine.
For the price of a penny, each 20-page issue contained three (or four) short stories which had originally been published in The Strand Magazine
during its first two years (1891 & 1892), along with the original
illustrations. The front cover of each issue featured an interior
illustration from one of the stories. It was published at the offices of "Tit-Bits."
Illustrated Penny Tales From The ''Strand'' Libraryended with the tenth issue.
It was immediately followed by The Strand Novelettes (1894-95),
a 32-page magazine which also sold for a penny. It was issued weekly
starting on October 18, 1894 and lasted for at least 39 issues. Abandoning
the reprint formula of the previous magazine, each issue contained a
single complete original novelette, illustrated with three engravings.
